“On the Night You Were Born” Inspired 1st Birthday

Description

The first time I read Nancy Tillman’s “On the Night You Were Born”, I was holding my three month old baby boy, Hudson.  The lines in the book brought tears to my eyes because they were so special…so magical…just like my beautiful baby.  When it came time to start planning his first birthday party, I knew I wanted something as sweet, unique, & as wonderful as he is.  “On the Night You Were Born” became the perfect inspiration for his celebration.  I have never seen a party inspired by this precious book so I had to do a lot of thinking to pull it together.  I wanted all of the elements of the party to represent things that were special to Hudson & my family.  We live in the south so Carolina style barbecue was the perfect menu.  The dessert table consisted of the most gorgeous blue ombre cake I have ever seen.  The baker perfectly matched the hues of the night sky in the book.  Grandma made her homemade sugar cookies into “H’s” and “1’s”.  I wanted the party favor to be a fun craft for young children that represented something about the night to perfectly tie into the theme.  The guests & their parents loved the personalized bug catchers!  The centerpieces were mason jars filled  with moss grass and white & yellow balloons to keep the look rustic yet young & fun!  There are elements from the book throughout such as the red cardinal, the polar bears, the night sky peeking in the window, & the stars.

Decorating Style

I wanted to use more than blue for the night ski so I created the party using primarily yellow & white.  I wanted to pull elements from the book in with personal things that had meaning to my family.  I also wanted a rustic but fun look so  combined outdoor elements with balloons.

Project Details

I created a dessert table backdrop by painting a canvas & using glitter hairspray to achieve twinkling starts.  I distressed an old wooden high chair.  I painted an old window found in my sister barn,
